Opening ceremony for Mount Fuji climbing season at Fuji Sengen Shrine in Fujiyoshida City on June 30th. The climbing season for Mt Fuji starts on July 1st every year. Summer is also the peak season for hiking in Japan.

Explanation: Jinja = shrine / Matsuri = festival / Mikoshi = portable shrine.

Many places across Japan have similar parades. Usually only men would carry the mikoshi, it’s probably because of the weight instead of strict custom. And in this video we can see women carrying it too.

Also, foxes are some sort of guardians in some Japanese shrines, hence the masks. The animal appears as magical in many folklore, although some are evil.
